Day 3

Subject: [firstname]: You are what you eat!

Hey [firstname]!

I'm sure you've heard the old saying “You are what you eat.” It's true. So to really supercharge your body, it's essential to eat a healthy diet.

If you're like most Americans, you probably eat a diet that's high in processed and “convenience” foods. It's also likely that you eat out in restaurants on a regular basis, too. While this kind of diet means you spend less time in the kitchen and more time doing other, more enjoyable activities, it's not the best thing for your health. The truth is: The kind of food we eat today is generally so processed and messed around with that all the vital nutrients have been lost. Instead, what you get is something that fills you up and satisfies your hunger, but has zero nutritional value. All you're getting is sugar and simple carbohydrates. Your body doesn't need these, so it lays them down as fat. This is why you can't lose weight.

As well as sorting out your gut and microbiome (like we discussed yesterday), ditch the junk food in favor of more natural foodstuffs. Eat more fruit and vegetables and less meat. Many fruits and vegetables have antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that can help fight off infection. In addition, the vitamins and minerals you get from your food (more about those tomorrow) are essential in keeping you healthy.

Cook everything from scratch. I know this probably makes it more like “inconvenience foods”, but following a recipe and cooking something different for the first time can be truly satisfying.

Go organic where possible. This is more expensive, but it's a worthwhile investment in your health. Commercially farmed produce often carries traces of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These aren't good for your health. Intensively reared livestock get fed antibiotics on a regular basis. This gets into the meat. When you eat it, it helps to build resistance, so the antibiotics you take when you get ill don't work as well as they should.
